Install Shelves By Yourself – It’s An Easy DIY Project

Wall mounted shelves offer the convenience of providing additional storage in a room. These could be of wood or metal with supporting brackets or you may have even floating shelves and use the available vertical space in the room, more so in case of smaller rooms. Perhaps, the best feature of vertical shelves is their easy installation. Here’s how to go about their installation:

1. You need a stud finder to locate the position of studs on the wall. Slide that along the surface of the wall and depending upon the model of the stud finder, you’ll get an audio or visual signal as it reaches the edge of wall stud. Using a pencil put a mark on that point. Starting from the opposite side, now slide the stud finder in the direction of the mark you already made till you get a signal of its having located the other end of the stud. Mark this point too.

If you move by about thirty-two inches and repeat the above process, you’ll locate the second stud. If the shelf isn’t too large to hit both the studs, you need not repeat the procedure. Just use wall plugs for supporting brackets, which need no drilling into the studs.

2. Position one of the brackets at the point you like to hang that. Using your pencil mark the position of the screw hole. Make sure that you’re beginning at the stud. Now, drill a pilot hole on the already marked point. If the bracket has two holes, you need to drill two pilot holes.

3. While keeping the bracket aligned with the screw holes above the pilot holes, drill or screw the correct sized screw in the pilot holes. See that it just embraces the area and leave it there without tightening it any further.

4. With the help of a level, align the other bracket alongside the wall to mark the position of its screw holes. Drill pilot holes and put in wall plugs. Next, screw down the brackets in the wall plugs. The wall plugs provide a good hold with the wall when you are unable to use studs for holing the brackets securely.

5. Finally, you tighten all the screws and fasten the wall shelf with the brackets. Using the level, ensure that it is balanced correctly.

So, you see installation of wall-mounted shelves is an easy affair and you wouldn’t take more than an hour to complete it. Yes, now is the time to sit back and benefit from your better-organized room.
